We regularly use the c5pl to perform doppler out-patient, perioperative and on occasion also for intraoperative use particularly for vascular assessment. Intraoperatively, for oncology, we also always use the device to identify the precise location of the tumors in real-time. CT and MRI can also be used preoperatively and cannot be used intraoperatively. So we use the device during hepatic transection. It is needed to assure margins and avoid injury during transectionas vasculobiliary structures are intraparenchymal and essentially cannot be visualized without imaging guidance. Overall we use the linear head for superficial tumors, and convex head for deeper structures.

For open abdominal surgery, we do use the convex and linear head. The high frequency and ideal depth scanning is also sufficient for intraoperative abdominal solid organ surgeries especially HPB organs. The probe can easily be washed, it’s good that it’s water resistant for cases of blood or bodily fluid exposure. I am currently also using this probe for open surgery, which is essential in our practice. For liver surgeries, we also always rely on the doppler functions to assess for hepatic arteries, portal system, and hepatic veins. We need the function to measure and assess adequacy of inflow and outflow, and for assessment of portal hypertension and such.
